While the story of Dark Souls has been pieced together by dedicated members of its community, it is likely that Lies of P will require similar effort for players to understand what the story of the game really is. Players are left to piece together the story of Dark Souls through cryptic hints from item descriptions and conversations with the few NPCs players come across. The Dark Souls series features some extensive lore, delivering it to players in an unconventional way. One of the biggest features of the Dark Souls series that Lies of P could be similar to is the subtle nature of its storytelling. Of course, the Dark Souls series are some of the biggest soulslike titles out there, and are largely responsible for the genre's popularity. Of course, there is also a lot of variety between soulslike titles some focus more on parrying over dodging, some feature slower or faster combat mechanics. One can expect massive boss fights, high difficulty, stamina-based combat, and lots of dying. Of course, players know some of what can be expected from a soulslike action RPG. Little has been shown of Lies of P beyond its cinematic trailer, but there are already some comparisons that can be made between Lies of P and some of the biggest soulslike games on the market. How players lie throughout the game will influence quests and dynamically change them. The game also features a unique mechanic focused on players lying to NPCs about their actions throughout the game. However, Lies of P has left Pinocchio's usual setting behind and replaced it with a Belle Époque town in Europe where all of humanity is gone, leaving the city to rot. Interestingly, Lies of P is inspired by Pinocchio and follows a player-controlled Pinocchio who embarks out to find his creator, Geppetto. Lies of P was just announced as a brand new soulslike action RPG from developer Round8 Studio, and publisher NeoWiz. Written by Dave Aubrey on behalf of GLHF. Regardless of how much inspiration it’s taking though, Lies of P has the potential to be a really good gothic action game, as long as it manages to iron out the creases and find an identity of its own. Even the in-game menus evoke Bloodborne so much it feels like a walking copyright strike. The world of Lies of P looks gorgeously detailed, but also too much like an update of what we already have. The fact is, a game taking this much inspiration from such a popular title can’t avoid comparisons for long. Does this formula sound familiar to anyone? Yes, heal items restock on death or upon visiting a checkpoint. The game is generous with shortcuts in these early stages, ensuring you’ll fight fewer enemies than you can count on one hand before getting back to where you were, allowing you to save those precious heal items. It’s a gradual but fairly swift build-up of difficulty: each time you find a ladder to drop or a gate to open to use as a future shortcut, you’ll find a new, tougher challenge just around the corner. You’re quickly introduced to more fearsome enemies or are assailed by groups while Molotov cocktails are being tossed at you from a rooftop, at which point your dodging skills are put to the test. The atmosphere contained within the short demo I played was incredibly impactful, and I quickly found myself memorizing enemy placement at every corner so I wouldn’t be taken by surprise. In a hypothetical vacuum, Lies of P is incredibly promising. Everything is in place, but attacks feel as if they’re plagued by the worst disease, input delay, and dodges aren’t just delayed but feel too short to be useful.īut these are minor aspects that can be adjusted in time for launch, and the game deserves to be judged by itself, away from comparisons to its biggest inspiration. Lies of P, by comparison, just feels a little rough. Anything that is out of line will be felt by the player. The problem is that a movement and combat system as nuanced and delicate as Bloodborne ’s is hard to replicate.
